I was a huge fan as a kid. The series came out and was huge when I was in elementary school in the early 90’s. I still have nostalgia for Goosebumps for sure and collected around the first 20-25 in the series. I held onto all the books that my girls read when they were little and still have them. These and Scary Stories To Tell In the Dark were major gateway horror that got me into King around 4th-5th grade with Cycle of the Werewolf.
I can see all those covers in my mind's eye! Great artwork, much better than the modern versions. Same with Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark - kids books were just allowed to be scarier back then!
I've never seen any of the Chucky movies. It sounds so terrifying to see them as a kid! Like your toys might turn on you.
I recommend the series and the show is good too. But if anything at least check out the OG Child’s Play. Classic horror before the series went more camp and comedy.
And yes the modern covers of the reprints of Goosebumps and Scary Stories are beyond lame. That would make a good pic episode actually comparing then to now.
Oh that's awesome you got to share them with your kids!
I remember the covers especially, and I remember checking them out by the armful from the library. But the plots are a big blank. I do want to read more of them. Any that you particularly recommend?
I loooved Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark! We actually have an episode on it, lol. Definitely gateway horror.
I'm also interested in your thoughts on Night of the Living Dummy. It was okay, but not as good as I remember the others being. Dummies have never really scared me, though.
Great read HH! I didn’t know this hit Shudder. Also you taught me a new word as I didn’t know the meaning of “sundowning”. Love it.
I’ll have to check out your Goosebumps episode. Do you have a few favorites in that series?
It's interesting that you ask, because I honestly don't remember any of the Goosebumps books. At all. And I read all of them.
Are you a Goosebumps fan yourself?

I’m like you in that I don’t really remember many plot specifics but here are a few that I can still remember being my favorites..
Welcome To Dead House
Don’t Go Into the Basement
Werewolf of Fever Swamp
The Haunted Mask
Say Cheese and Die
The Scarecrow Walks At Midnight
I liked Night of the Living Dummy I think but didn’t love it either.
I still have the original Scare Stories books. The best illustrations ever! I’ll check out your pod episode!
Slappy never scared me but I was terrified of Chucky as a kid. I watched Child’s Play at a birthday party sleepover when I was in the 2nd grade.
